A Rashidat Ajibade inspired performance has ensured FC Robo Queens of Lagos did not leave Onikan Stadium today without the three points at stake as they beat fellow league debutante Martins White Doves of Edo State 3-0 in one of the Nigeria Women Premier League week 8 matches.
According to FC Robo Queens Team Manager, Ademisoye Julius Adebayo, “Her best is yet to come, she’s just coming up.”
The goals could have been more for deserving FC Robo who dominated proceedings from start to finish, but they had to make do with a first half goal from Esther Ndubuisi and two more in the second period through Captain of the side, Ajibade and Amirat Adebisi.
Some scrappy defending from visiting Martins White Dove saw them concede their first goal in the 16th minute as Robo’s Ndubuisi was on hand to pounce from really close range. From then on, speedy Ajibade and Chidinma Okeke combined swiftly several times in the opening half to have reaped as many goals and extended the home side’s lead, but poor finishing was their undoing.
Okeke was the culprit most of the time as she could not get her name on the score sheet with the many opportunities she had; the ball either went wide or into the gloves of Doves goalkeeper, Obia Christiana. Again, even their many set pieces – corner-kicks especially – yielded nothing.
Martins White Doves on the other hand hardly threatened Robo’s defence so goalkeeper Amole Damilola felt she was on holiday. However she was brought back to reality when Doves had a free kick and Chinwe Ufomba almost took advantage of her laxity to equalize.
Leading 1-0 at half time, FC Robo returned for the second half still breathing down their visitor’s neck and Flamingoes star, Ajibade was quick to say she’s not done yet as her bullet header off a corner in the 46th minute was punched out by Christiana for another corner. Not long after, the captain fed Alaba Olabiyi who in turn struck the bar with her shot.
Ajibade later got rewarded for all her efforts in the 68th minute. On the end of a cross from Okeke, she dribbled past her marker and gave Christiana no chance with her powerful strike.
Almost immediately, substitute Oluwaseun Atanda – who came in for Olabiyi – saw her goal ruled off-side but Robo still got their third goal from set-pieces specialist, Amirat Adebisi on the 79th minute.
Ajibade was not spared from being yellow carded before the match ended and that was deserved too.
Speaking of her exceptional performance, Team Manager, Adebayo said, “she has to live up to her expectation because she’s a national team player; she has played at the U-17 level, and she has been told to wait for the next U-17.”
Emmanuel Osahon’s FC Robo now has six points from back to back league matches. Before the league went on its second break, they had benefited three goals and three points from a walkover since Adamawa Queens did not show up for their week four game.
