NWPL: Bayelsa Queens, Rivers Angels still on top after rescheduled matches

Sule 1

Bayelsa Queens’ Rafiat Sule has overtaken Osun Babes’ Precious Edewor to become leading scorer in the on-going Nigeria Women Premier League season after netting a double in her side’s 4-0 thrashing of Martins White Doves away from home on Sunday in a rescheduled Week 5 encounter.

The sensational forward now has nine goals to her name and has been announced a Player of the Month of August as reward for her exceptional performance in the month under review.

Blessing Dabrinze and Edeji Chidinma were also on song for the Rollandson Odeh tutored side in Benin City.

Elsewhere, Igboamalu Chinyere, with a brace from two halves, ensured that Nasarawa Amazons beat Rivers Angels 2-0 in a rescheduled week 11 game at the Lafia City stadium on Saturday.

The goals which came in the 10th and 54th minute handed reigning league Champions their second league defeat of the season as their best efforts to at least get a draw were futile.

After Amazons’ early lead, the Angels could have equalized twice but Ijeoma Obi was denied by the cross bar while Cecilia Nku sent her shot straight into the arms of goalkeeper Sangonuga Ibijoke.

Speaking after the match, Head coach of Nasarawa Amazons, Oluwaseyi Michael said his game plan worked.

“It was an evenly matched game, but we thank God. God saw us through; we said we would attack from the blast of the whistle and that was what we did and it favoured us.

“We got our first goal in the first ten minutes of the first half and the first ten minutes of the second half too, so is our game plan,” said Oluwaseyi.

In Abuja on Saturday, two league debutantes locked horns and the hosts Capital City Doves finished the match 3-1 better that COD United Ladies of Lagos.
