Rivers Angels’ right back, Ugo Njoku and left back, Mabel Effiom are plotting the exit of Confluence Queens from this year’s Women Federation Cup, with both sides set for their quarter-final clash at the Nnamdi Azikiwe stadium in Enugu by 3pm today (August 12).
The six-time champions are looking forward to a tough encounter but hope to dispatch their Kogi-based opponents, who now parade an in-form former Rivers Angels forward, Lola Philips.
“We’ll do our possible best to stop her, so her own case is never our problem,” Mabel Effiom told Rivers Angel’s media officer, Jessica Amadi.
“We’ll do our possible best to make sure that we keep our net safe from goals.
“I believe that God will surely help us come out with victory,” Effiom added.
In the quarter final of the 2013 edition of the Fed Cup, Rivers Angels and Confluence Queens played out a 1-1 draw at regulation time before Charity John turned heroine with two saves in the shootouts that ended 4-2 in favour of Rivers Angels at the MKO Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta.
But Ugo Njoku has stated they will not let the game spill into penalties this time as they will ensure to get the job done in 90 minutes.
“I promise Rivers State total victory. Kogi Confluence is not a push over team and we are also a good side so 90 minutes will decide,” Ugo said.
“We’re not going to a penalty shootout anymore because our girls, everybody is ready; we’re going all out, full force to the game, we’re not scared of any team in this country, we are equal to the task,” she boasted.
The END of Rivers Angels?
On the part of Confluence Queens, Coach Mallam Suleiman Adamu also known as ‘Zico’, had declared over the weekend that today “will be the end of Rivers Angels.”
He stated this while speaking to journalists after his side’s impressive 3-0 victory over Adamawa Queens in Lokoja.
In Adamu’s words, “This is our best performance so far this season and it’s a good one to face Champions Rivers Angels on Wednesday. I can tell you that this is the end of Rivers Angels.”
Rivers Angels did not play over the weekend as their match was postponed.
