The 10th Africa Women Cup of Nations, formerly known as African Women’s Championship (AWC) will take place in Cameroon from 19 November to 3 December 2016 and the South African Women’s National team players have reported to camp on Sunday 3 April 2016, to prepare for AWCON qualifiers.
Sasol Banyana will play the first-leg away against Botswana on the 9 April 2016, 16h00 at Lobaste Sports Complex Stadium, Lobatse Town Council and the return leg will be played on the 12 April 2016, 19h00 at Makhulong Stadium, Tembisa.
Ahead of the encounter against Botswana, Banyana Banyana played two friendly matches against their Cameroonian counterparts.
Banyana head coach Vera Pauw said: ” These (the two friendly matches) were very vital exercise. Apart from the results in which we won one game and drew the other, the physically bigger Cameroonians gave us another dimension on which we need to work on.”
During the friendly games, coach Pauw seized the opportunity to introduced new players Linda Motlhalo (17) and Stephanie Malherbe even as she ressted experienced left back Nothando ‘Vivo’ Vilakazi.
“I would like to play as many international friendly matches as possible ahead of us leaving for Rio, so that we also have a feel of different styles. Such training helps us on working on various aspects of our game,” explained Pauw.
As regards team news, Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Busisiwe Ndimeni sustained an injury in Cameroon while Jabu Mazibuko is back from injury.
