After several postponements, the Kenya Women’s Premier League (KeWPL) finally kicked on the weekend of 14-15 May 2016 with Eldoret Falcons recording a 2-1 win against Baringo County Starlets.

However, it was not until the weekend of May 21-22 that the league went on full throttle as Eldoret Falcons played their second league match and nine other teams cranked up their league campaign.

The weekend saw 23 goals scored with a whopping 19 of them coming on derby Sunday as title favourites—defending champions Thika Queens and last season’s first runner-up Spedag Ladies—registered emphatic wins and KeWNT players, fired up from qualifying for the 2016 AWCON in April, found the net for their respective clubs across the country.

The sole match played on Saturday saw Harambee Starlets’ Pauline Awino give the hosts the lead in the 19th minute before Vivian Ebere scored twice in just two minutes (34th and 36th minute) to register the first brace of the season. Rebecca Akinyi sailed home a beauty of a shot in the 46th minute but that would be nothing more than a consolation goal as the hosts grabbed a 3-1 win.

Goals Galore Sunday

Eldoret Falcons 0-4 Wadadia Mumias

Eldoret Falcons were looking to make it two wins in two after their 2-0 win in their league opener against Baringo County Starlets last week. But their hopes were snuffed fast thanks to a much superior performance by Wadadia Mumias that was crowned with the Sharons (Sharon Aidi and Sharon Narotso) scoring a goal each and Benta Omita scoring the second brace of the season to gift the visitors a win in their opening league match and Eldoret Falcons their first loss of the season.

Spedag Ladies 5-2 Mombasa Olympic

In the first derby on derby Sunday, Harambee Starlets’ teenage sensation Mwanahalima ‘Dogo’ Adam found the net in just one minute after kickoff to give league debutantes Mombasa Olympic the lead in the Mombasa derby.

It was the agile Harambee Starlets’ player Esse Akida who stole the show, though, scoring in the 7th, 27th and 64th minute to record the first hat-trick of the season. Wendy Achieng and Bushenei Sharon, both national team players too, were the other scorers for Spedag Ladies, a star-studded side that boasts nine national team players, including the national team captain Ann Aluoch and the scorer of the winning goal against Algeria that sent Kenya to its first AWCON: Cheris Avilia.

Vihiga Queens 6-0 Vihiga Leeds

The Vihiga derby registered goals aplenty as Vihiga Queens registered a 6-0 win to make their first indication that they plan to go toe-to-toe with the title favourites this season. The hosts’ goals came in quick succession courtesy of Mercyline Anyango and Phoebe Okech scoring a brace each while Lilian Adera and Harambee Starlets’ Enez Mango scored a goal apiece.

Saving the best for last, the last kickoff of the weekend saw defending champions record the biggest win margin of the first round of league matches with Lucy Mukhwana, Christine Nafula, Caroline Kiget and Harambee Starlets’ Anita Adongo scoring a goal apiece.

The star of the match, and indeed the weekend, was yet another Harambee Starlets’ player, midfielder Mary Kinuthia, who sunk five good ones into the net, two from the penalty spot, in Thika Queen’s 9-0 massacre of league debutants Gaspo Youth. This clearly sent apparent signs that they have intentions of successfully defending their title.
