Former Nigerian Women Premier League (NWPL) champions, Pelican Stars played host to heavy weights, Bayelsa Queens at the U. J. Esuene stadium in Calabar, in a match day week 2 fixture of this season’s NWPL.
The hosts struggled to contain a rampaging Bayelsa Queens whose captain, Joy Bokiri missed an early chance to put her team in front.
Pelican Stars started gaining confidence in their offensive play as the game progressed with talented Chiaka Ugorji ‘s quick feet and passes giving Bayelsa Queens defenders tough time.
At the 35th minute, the deadlock was broken by the visitors through Rofiat Sule, who missed two clear chances at goal earlier on.
The second half resumed with hosts, Pelican Stars in the driver’s seat as their counter attacking play upfront had Bayelsa Queens goalie, Alaba making superb saves.
Pelican Stars Guinea international player, Uzoamaka Igwe was in charge of the midfield and her timely tackles and doggedness ensured that her team kept the ball possession. She made sure her team-mates were not complacent against an offensive Bayelsa Queens for a greater part of the second half.
At the 85th minute, Rofiat again pounced on a loose ball, beats off her markers and slotted home to complete her brace against the Pelican goalie. Poor defending from the Calabar based team.
At the nick of additional time after 90 minutes, Bayelsa Queens, Cole hacked down an on-rushing Pelican Stars player in the penalty box with centre referee pointing to the spot for a spot kick to the hosts.
Pelican Stars sensation, Chiaka Ugorji slotted the ball into the back of the net to grab a consolation goal for her team.
