Each member of Ghana’s female senior national team, the Black Queens, has received an amount of GH¢52,000 ($13,000) from the Ghanaian government as payment for their 2016 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations bonuses.
The Queens won bronze at the just ended AWCON in Cameroon after beating South Africa 1-0 in the 3rd place match.
But the players had to take to the street to demand their bonuses, which they claimed, dated back four years ago.
On Thursday, the government delivered its promise to the team by issuing cheques to the members of the AWCON squad.
Also, each member of the female U-20 team, the Black Princesses received an amount of GH¢16,000 while members of the Black Maidens (U-17) will be paid GH¢24,000 once their accounts are processed.
Ghana Black Queens in December 2016, followed the example of their Nigerian counterparts and embarked on a public demonstration in a bid to force the payment of their outstanding bonuses by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
