NWPL Matchday 3: Rivers Angels trash FC Robo, now atop group A

Reigning Champions, Rivers Angels were like a house on fire in the second half of their Matchday 3 encounter as they spanked youthful FC Robo 3-0 on Wednesday 12th April, 2017 at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt.
Rivers Angels’ Cynthia Aku was voted player of the match as her brace in the 67th and 77th minutes coupled with the penalty scored by Chinaza Uchendu in between was what sealed the game for the Jewels of Rivers.
FC Robo and Rivers Angels were sizing themselves up in the early minutes of the first half in what could be tagged a battle of the midfield. In the 24th minute, Rivers Angels forward, Rafiat Sule beat off her marker and connected her pass to on rushing team mate, Chinaza Uchendu who ballooned the ball way off the goal post. Minutes later, FC Robo’s Okeke Chidinma had her close range shot parried over the cross bar by the an alert, Rivers Angels goalie, Tochukwu Oluehi.
In the 30th minute, Rivers Angels’ Cynthia Aku missed a golden opportunity as her one on one chance against FC Robo goalie, Amole Damilola was wasted to the disgust of her team mate, Cecelia Nku who was unmarked. FC Robo captain, Rasheedat Ajibade had her goal bound ball cleared off at the nick of time by Rivers Angels defender, Ugo Njoku in the 39th minute.
At the beginning of the second half, FC Robo had a quick counter attack as Monday Gift shrugged off Rivers Angels Ugo Njoku but her low shot was no trouble for Rivers Angels goalie, Tochukwu Oluehi who smothered the ball calmly. In the 66th minute, Rivers Angels Chinaza Uchendu was gifted with a slick through pass from substitute, Glory Iroka but her left footed shot was denied by the upright as FC Robo goalie, Amole Damilola was clearly beaten.
A minute later, FC Robo Monday Gift once again with her quick feet outpaced Rivers Angels duo of Osinachi Ohale and Ugo Njoku but her shot was punched away by Oluehi. The deadlock was finally broken in the 67th minute as Rivers Angels, Cynthia Aku pounced on a pass from team mate, Mercy Amanze to shoot past FC Robo goalie, Amole Damilola.
Four minutes later, an FC Robo player handled the ball inside the box of her team and the centre referee pointed to the spot for a penalty kick. Rivers Angels’ Chinaza Uchendu calmly slotted home to give the hosts a 2 goals lead in the 74th minute.
In the 77th minute, Cynthia completed her brace from 18 yards out with a chip over helpless FC Robo goalie, Amole Damilola. Nonetheless, FC Robo’s Monday Gift never gave up as her pacy feet and dribbles remained a constant threat to the defence line of Rivers Angels but the scoreline did not change.
