NWPL Matchday 5 Wrap: Ibom Angels grab first win to move off bottom while Rivers Angels, Delta Queens remain unbeaten

Striker Charity Reuben was on song again as Ibom Angels clinched their first win of the 2016/17 Nigeria Women Premier League season, beating Abia Angels 2-1 in a Matchday 5 encounter decided at the Uyo Township Stadium.

The lanky forward who defended the colours of Nigeria at the 2016 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup recorded her fourth goal in as many matches to ensure that the Whyte Ogbonda tutored side got off the bottom of Group A.

Blessing Okpe had opened the scoring for the hosts in the 54th minute before Reuben added a second two minutes later to render Precious Christopher’s  68th minute effort a mere consolation for visiting Abia Angels.

In the other Group A match played on Wednesday, Coach Edwin Okon would take no prisoners in his approach as he unleashed a lethal forward line featuring Rafiat Sule, Mercy Amanze, Amarachi Ojinma and Patience Kalu, against Sunshine Queens of Akure.

Former Bayelsa Queens attacker, Kalu put up a player of the match display to inspire the Jewel of Rivers to a 2-0 victory over the Owena Mermaids at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium.

Rivers Angels camped in Sunshine Queens’ half for most parts of the match as they mounted pressure on their guests, so it was no surprise when Sunshine Queens’s defender Akudo Ogbonna headed into her own net in the 26th minute. Amarachi Ojinma then wrapped things up 16 minutes into the second half as the reigning Champions kept another clean sheet at home.

A day later in Yenegoa, Aminat Yakubu and captain Joy Bokiri were on target as Bayelsa Queens saw off newly promoted Heartland Queens 2-0. A result that lifted them to second on the log.

Free scoring Nasarawa Amazons were the biggest winners of Matchday 5. The Group B leaders dispatched Pelican Stars 3-0 in clinical fashion in Lafia.

The Amazons who got off to a quick fire start were 2-0 up in the first 20 minutes courtesy of goals from Chinyere Igboamalu and Ikeh Ginika. Mariam Ibrahim would go on to put the icing on the cake on the 65th minute.

Elsewhere in Delta, Adamawa Queens suffered their first defeat of the season in the clash of two unbeaten sides.

First half goals from Rita Akarekor and Joy Jegede for Delta Queens means they are the only side yet to lose a game in Group B.

Meanwhile Confluence Queens got back to winning ways with a narrow 1-0 victory at home to Sa’adatu Amazons. Mariam Aluko got the only goal of the match on the stroke of half time.

Edo Queens wrapped up proceedings in Group B on Thursday as a penalty by Regina Otu put their Osun Babes visitors to the sword.
