Francisca Ordega scored the solitary goal in the 19th minute, as Washington Spirit defeated Portland Thorns 1-0, in a National Women Soccer League (NWSL) clash on Sunday.

It was Ordega’s second goal in two successive games (taking her tally to four for the season), and the Nigerian hit the net in style after winning the ball off Allie Long and dribbling her way past three markers, before firing home beyond the goalkeeper, Adrianna Franch.

She continued to pose a threat to the Thorns backline into the second half even as Amandine Henry and Christine Sinclair’s side improved, but the Spirit held on for a crucial third win of the season stretching their fine form to a three-match unbeaten streak.

However, the Nigerian forward limped out injured in added time, leaving her side playing with 10 women.

This reportedly caused a heated exchange on the touchline between her coach Jim Gabarra and visiting coach, Mark Parsons. It sparked a fiery debate on Twitter.
