Ghana 2018: Uganda to take part in qualifying campaign

Uganda Women’s National team, the Crested Cranes, will take part in the qualifiers  for the 2018 TOTAL Women Africa Cup of Nations (AWCON) finals.

The biennial tournament will be held in Ghana from 17 November to 1 December 2018.

Crested Cranes have only participated once in the continental showdown and this serves as good news for the region and its  football development considering that Uganda is the second lowest ranked African team in FIFA rankings, having been dormant for some time.

Crested Cranes took part in the second edition of regional tournament known as CECAFA last year, where Tanzania beat Kenya 2-1 to take the title.

Kenya was the only nation from the region that took part in the 12th edition of AWCON that was held in Cameroon earlier in 2016, where Nigeria comfortably defended the title.

Uganda will contest for the seven slots remaining in the qualifiers that kicks off in February. Ghana has qualified as the host nation.

The tournament will act as the African qualifiers for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France where the top three teams will represent the continent.
