Kenya’s senior women’s football team, Harambee Starlets will begin their campaign in the ongoing Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Women’s Championship against Mozambique in a Group B clash set for Liveve Stadium on Thursday.
Kenya, who are making a maiden appearance at the event as an invited team, start as favourites on paper and by virtue of their Fifa ranking where they are placed 23rd unlike their opponents who lie way beyond the 100 mark.
However, Kenya will be missing key players, with the likes of Co-captain Mary Kinuthia and Esse Akida missing in the attack.
Kinuthia is out owing to personal reasons while Akida is preparing with her organization, Moving the Goal Posts, for their Global Goals World Cup Finals set for September 16 in New York.
The absence leaves Kanyi with other options, with Neddy Atieno and Mwanahalima Adam who missed out during the African Women Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon last year, expected to electrify the attack.
Mercy Achieng’, Lucy Mukhwana and Phoebe Oketch are expected to get a chance alongside the duo.
With the presence of Christine Nafula in the midfielder department, Cheris Avilia and Caroline Onyango will partner with Caroline Kiget.
Richard Kanyi will be seeking his first win and the team’s first maiden title.
Kanyi will be assisted by Mary Adhiambo.
