Kanyi names Kenya COSAFA squad

Rebecca Magoma
Harambee Starlets coach Richard Kanyi has named a 20-member for the COSAFA Women’s Championship set from September 13-24, 2017 in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.

Conspicuously missing out of the squad are AWCON stars: custodian Vivian Akinyi, Mary Kinuthia, Irene Ogutu, Sharon Bushenei and Jacky Ogol who have been regulars in the team.

Akinyi suffered an injury during the national side build up match against Roseline Academy U-19 Boys where the national team won 3-2.

Kinuthia and Ogutu didn’t report to camp. Kinuthia is still nursing a sick mother while Ogutu suffered an injury while Bushenei and Ogol didn’t make the traveling squad.

Commenting after he released the squad, Kanyi stayed focused adding that he will use the squad he has for now and the players who didn’t make the squad, will wait for other assignments.

“We are ready for the championship because we have definitely prepared well,” he said.

Kenya has been drawn in Group B alongside Mozambique, Swaziland and Mauritius. Only Kenya has graced the African Women Cup of Nations finals in this group.

Hosts and defending champions, Zimbabwe has been drawn in Group A with Zambia, Madagascar and Malawi. The hosts are a superior side in this group having graced the Rio Olympics in 2016.

Group C has the experienced Banyana Banyana of South Africa who are also championship record winners on three, Namibia, Lesotho and Botswana.

Kenya arrived Zimbabwe for the tournament on Monday, September 11.
