A new women’s Eredivisie season commences today (September 1) in the Netherlands and Nigeria’s Sophia Omidiji is in high spirit as she hopes to lead her team, S.B.V. Excelsior, to victory in their opening match against PSV.
The 20-year-old striker joined S.B.V. Excelsior from Belgian side KAA Gent two months ago and has been fully involved in their preparations for the new season as they look to contend for the title with eight other teams.
In a friendly match this past weekend, Omidiji scored a brace for her side in a 2-1 victory over a Belgian Division One side, OH Leuven.
“I am looking forward to the new season which starts on 1st September against PSV. So far pre-season has been good and the players are all getting used to one another as it is a new team. From an individual point of view, I want to be starting every game and playing consistently to help the team achieve positive results,” Omidiji said to Ladies March.
“We will be up against very experienced teams like Ajax, PSV, FC Twente, so it will be a great test for us. Hopefully my performances for club will also put me in the spotlight for National team selection.”
Sophia Omidiji trained with the Nigeria U-20 Women’s team as they prepared for the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Papua New Guinea, however, she is yet to make her debut in national team colours.
“I have always stated my ambition to play for the Super Falcons team and I am confident that my chances will come. For now, it is all about playing well for the club this season and when the time is right, hopefully I will get the call,” Omidiji declared.
