Rivers Angels are safety through to the final of this year’s AITEO Cup after spanking rivals Bayelsa Queens 4-0 at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium on Wednesday to progress 6-2 on aggregate.
The Jewel of Rivers enjoyed a second half blitz that saw Amarachi Ojinma score a brace while Gladys Akpa and Evelyn Nwabuoku grabbed one apiece from the penalty spot.
Coach Edwin Okon’s charges who are the defending champions did a large chunk of the job in an intense first leg when they came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at the Nembe City Stadium.
And with the aim of finishing off their South South neighbours in the return leg, they enjoyed the better chances in the first half. But Patience Kalu, Rafiat Sule and Amarachi Ojinma were all denied by Favour Nwoahia who stood in between the sticks for Bayelsa Queens – Bayelsa Queens’ number one goalkeeper, Jonathan Alaba was given a red card for dissent in the first leg.
In the second half, however, Bayelsa Queens could not contain Rivers Angels and they conceded a penalty in the 49th minute after Amarachi Ojinma was fouled in the area.
Gladys Akpa stepped up to take it in the 53rd minute and scored the goal that calmed the home fans’ nerves.
Three minutes later, Ojinma got on the score sheet after heading home a brilliant cross from substitute Ugo Njoku.
Another substitute, Evelyn Nwabuoku, then extended the lead to 3-0 from the spot before Ojinma completed her brace to wrap things up.
In the other semifinal, it is still not certain which team will play against Ibom Angels as the case involving Abia Angels and Confluence Queens is yet to be resolved.
In the meantime, Rivers Angels will now turn their attention to the NWPL Super Four scheduled for next week with their dream of a double still alive and well.
