FIFAU17WWCQ: Nigeria reveal squad for Ethiopia clash

After a little over two weeks of camping and training in Abuja, Nigeria’s U17 Women’s national team will begin their qualification campaign for next year’s FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup away to Ethiopia on Sunday (December 3).

The list of 18 players to make the trip to East Africa for the first round, first leg World Cup qualifier was released to the media on Thursday before the team departed the shores of the country from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

As part of preparations for the encounter against Ethiopia, the Flamingoes executed two friendly matches which they won. They defeated Nigeria’s U15 boys team 3-1 on November 24 in their first test match before spanking an Abuja selected women side 5-0 four days later.

Patricia Innocent scored a brace while Esther Onyenezide, Precious Vincent and Dorshima Tarnum also registered their names on the score sheet for the Bala Nikyu-tutored side.

In spite of having very little time to prepare, the Flamingoes second Assistant Coach, Ajuma Ottache believes that “we are going to be ready” to face Ethiopia.

“We are just throwing in all our best to make sure that we come out tops in the game in Ethiopia after which we can actually settle down to look at the team properly and look at areas where we need to inject players into the team to beef up for the return leg and probably for the other games that will come forth after it,” Ottache told LadiesMarch in an exclusive interview.

When asked if there was any procedure by which the age of a player is established, Ottache said:

“We just rely basically on the documentations that are being provided, and with the young crop of players that we have, I would actually believe that their ages are correct because I have seen quite a number of them play football in Lagos and in various youth competitions. Some of them, like Patricia Innocent, just finished their secondary school.”
