NWPL Matchday 1 Wrap: Super Falcons coach in the stands as barren draws headline proceedings

Head Coach of Nigeria’s senior women’s national team, Thomas Dennerby was present at one of the match venues on Wednesday as six Matchday 1 Nigeria Women Premier League encounters were decided across the country.

The 2017/2018 season officially got underway on Saturday in Lafia where defending champions Nasarawa Amazons were surprisingly held to a goalless draw by a team that barely survived relegation last season, FC Robo Queens of Lagos.

Three more barren draws were witnessed as action continued on Wednesday and two of those came from the South/South zone of the country.

Goalkeeper Tochukwu Oluehi saved the day for her team, Rivers Angels on their visit to the Kwale Township Stadium where they played hosts Delta Queens while Edo Queens and Ibom Angels also settled for a stalemate in Benin.

New comers Jokodolu Babes ensured that their first ever topflight match did not end in defeat as they entertained Adamawa Queens. Meanwhile there was a score draw in Calabar as the match between Pelican Stars and Osun Babes ended 1-1.

The first goal of the season was recorded at the Akure Township Stadium where Patience Agbokhade scored in the second minute to give Sunshine Queens a 1-0 lead over Abia Angels. The Owena Mermaids would go on to get the biggest win of the matchday as they dominated their visitors to a 4-1 win.

Coach Dennerby watched the only away victory of the day at the Confluence Stadium in Lokoja as a first half brace from captain Joy Jerry helped Bayelsa Queens subdue their hosts Confluence Queens.

The match between newly promoted side Sure Babes and Heartland Queens will be played today to conclude Matchday 1.
