NWPL Matchday 3 wrap: Edo Queens’ Nneka Julius scores season’s first hat trick in emphatic win over hapless Heartland Queens

Confluence Queens claimed their first win of the 2017/18 Nigeria Women Premier League season on Wednesday April 25 with a 1-0 victory over Rivers Angels who on the flip side suffered their first defeat of the season.

The intense matchday three encounter decided at the Confluence Stadium in Lokoja kept spectators at the edge of their seats as Titilayo Aweda took advantage of a defensive blunder by Rivers Angels’ Gladys Akpa to secure all three points for the hosts in the 55th minute.

Elsewhere in Benin, Edo Queens recorded the biggest win of Matchday 3 as Heartland Queens were humiliated with four unreplied goals.

It was Peace Efih who opened the scoring before Nneka Julius registered the first hat trick of the season.

Zainab Olapade and Temilope Owoeye scored in either half as Jokodolu Babes saw off FC Robo Queens in Ogbomoso.
Meanwhile Adamawa Queens emerged 1-0 winners over Abia Angels courtesy of a 19th minute effort from Oluchi Nwachukwu.

Bayelsa Queens and Ibom Angels then played out a goalless draw. A result which means Coach Whyte Ogbonda’s Ibom Angels are yet to score a goal this season – alongside Heartland Queens. They remain unbeaten but their matches so far have ended up as barren affairs.

At the Ilorin Township Stadium, Delta Queens dominated proceedings from start to finish as they inflicted a 0-2 home loss on newly promoted Sure Babes.
First half goals from Brume Ikehua and Ohadiwe Maryann gave Delta Queens the well deserved victory.

Osun Babes also lost at home to Nasarawa Amazons. Anam Imo scored a brace for the visitors before the hosts tried to recover.

Nkechi Agams came on as a substitute in the 53rd minute for Osun Babes and alongside Yetunde Fajobi mounted pressure on Nasarawa Amazons. Agams eventually won a freekick which was taken and converted by Ayo Ojo.

Prior to the match at the Osogbo City Stadium, the Chief Operating Officer of the NWFL board, Ayo Abdulrahman spoke to the players of Osun Babes and Nasarawa Amazons on the issue of players’ contracts.

Players from both teams were then given valid contract papers based on the NFF and the NWFL Players Contract Status.
