Names & Numbers: Keeping up with the Nigeria Women Premier League

Six match days gone, the 2017/18 Nigeria Women Premier League season is going on strong in exciting and intriguing fashion. It has so far seen 75 goals in 47 matches which is an average of 1.5 goals per game. There have been 12 goalless draws and there is still one match left to round off Matchday 6. That game between Osun Babes and Jokodolu Babes will be played on May 28.

The numbers

ZERO – Coach Whyte Ogbonda’s Ibom Angels are the only team yet to concede a goal this season, thanks to a rock solid back line marshaled by defender Glory Ogbonna and goalkeeper Nelly Ekeh, both of whom missed the team’s Matchday 6 encounter against Confluence Queens having been called up to the country’s U-20 women’s national team. On Matchday 6, Lucky Andy took the place of Ekeh in between the sticks for the Uyo-based side and continued the clean sheet trend.

On the flip side, Heartland Queens have scored the least number of goals so far in the season; ONE, while conceding a whopping 11. To further highlight their struggle, the Owerri-based side tutored by former Super Falcons coach Eucharia Uche, are one of two teams yet to taste victory this season as they occupy last place in Group A. Their bottom-placed counterparts in Group B, Pelican Stars of Calabar are the other winless side.

Coincidentally, TWO teams also have not known defeat. They are Delta Queens and Ibom Angels and they occupy first and second place respectively in Group A with the same number of points (12) and the same number of goal difference (+4). Interestingly, prior to Matchday 6, there were three teams with identical number of points (9) and goal difference (+3) in Group A. Bayelsa Queens led the group at the time having scored more goals, but their first loss of the season which came on Matchday 6 has pushed them down to fourth.

THREE straight goalless draws was how Ibom Angels got their season underway. Though unbeaten, that form saw them drop to 7th place in the eight-team group A table. However, they have now climbed to second after three wins in a row.

Speaking of wins, Sunshine Queens of Akure have got the highest number; FOUR. The Coach Wemimo Matthew-tutored side are the leaders of Group B with 13 points, and their lethal attack comprising Tina Oyatheleme, Patience Agbokhade and Lola Phillips have produced 11 goals which is currently the highest number this season.

But Sure Babes of Ilorin have the worst loss record; FIVE.

Meanwhile SIX away victories have been registered.

The names

Nasarawa Amazons’ ANAM IMO, Sunshine Queens’ TINA OYATHELEME and Delta Queens’ BRUME IKEHUA are tied at the top of the goal scorers’ chart with four goals so far this season but NNEKA JULIUS of Edo Queens is the only hat trick queen after six matches. She scored the goals in her side’s 4-0 demolition of Heartland Queens in a matchday 3 encounter.

For keeping five straight clean sheets prior to obeying Coach Christopher Danjuma’s call, Ibom Angels goalkeeper NELLY EKEH deserves some accolades. Then at the moment it’s CHIAKA UGORJI who holds the record for the fastest goal of the season after her 55 seconds effort helped Abia Angels to a 2-0 victory over Jokodolu Babes.
